Appleby Horse Fair (The Gypsy Fair)
This archive film of Appleby Horse Fair captures all of the action from the world’s most famous gypsy fair, as always the travellers and Gypsies went out of their way to perform for our cameras.

Everyone is welcome at Appleby Fair. It is one of those rare events where there is no admission fee. You are an invited guest, where you can watch gypsies washing their horses in the river Eden, find horse dealers buying and selling Skewbald and Piebald ponies see sulkies racing down the lane to Long Marton, or amble along the isles of the huge market. All the Gypsies in England come to Appleby Horse Fair and bring the sleepy Cambrian town to life.

If you ever go to Appleby Horse Fair, you will be an invited guest. It’s like the aristocracy, the gypsies will be so nice to you, they will treat you with exceptional manners, but you will never be one of them. And as long as you both realise that, you will all get along champion.
